An important component of any freshwater setup, plants are attractive, give a natural atmosphere to the tank and perform beneficial functions to the conditions in the tank. When the plants in your tank are growing the natural process of photosynthesis assimilates carbon dioxide, light and nitrates (harmful to your fish) into oxygen and inert gases. Of course the plants also grow (remarkably quickly under the approprate conditions) causing a satisfying natural progression to the beauty of your tank, often with little or no intervention from the aquarist!
